Can Romney improve the employment in US?

On Oct.23rd, Obama and Romney continued the topic of employment and Romney guaranteed he would bring lots of opportunities back to America. That’s good news for people who are suffering from unemployment. However, I think that’s just tricks for vote.

Firstly, he shifts the anger of American citizens to China because Chinese manufactory industry took a lot jobs away from American. If he has the chance to be the president, the trade sanctions will take place toward China. However, only people who never learned economics will believe this action can work. We know that when you import goods you import wages as well. Hire one untrained worker in America equal at least 5 people in China. Moreover, it is true that when Chinese goods loses attraction to US because of the high tax, there are still tremendous cheap products from India, Mexico, Haiti , Honduras, and so on.

Secondly, he criticizes that Chinese never obey the rules. Though China is a member of WTO, import taxes are still very high which decreased the total amount of products US could export to China. In addition, Chinese show no respect to copyright which also reduced US profit. These claims are true. But still Romney cannot let everyone get his job as he said because that goes against the law of economics---Unemployment is about 4~8% in a healthy economic system .

I agree with Obama’s point of view that the only approach to improve employment is to enhance the standard of education and research so that we can let more qualified citizens find their jobs. However, uneducated workers will suffer unemployment forever because of the high wages.

Information is from the 3rd debate.

  1. I agree with your view's on Obama's point that improving employment is pumping money into the education system and not cut down on opportunities for people to educate themselves. Most things being said I personally are to give Americans a thought to how possibly make the country better and better themselves. I believe if Romney were to put sanctions on China there would be more harm than good but that is yet to be known. We can measure past performance in different places but we can only go on their word as to what exactly each would do. It's hard to know what will happen until one takes office or returns to office but it's important that we find a way to take responsibility for ourselves so that our uneducated workers are going to have competitive wages abroad. But it seems that what we consider uneducated workers are still more educated than countries abroad this is something we need to grow and have uneducated workers have their education grow in some way.

  2. Welcome to American politics! A majority of what both candidates say before election will not happen if the become President and many points are just points that will get them votes with their party. Its interesting that Romney's point is bring back outsourced jobs from China, maybe he can start with all the jobs lost to China when he was in charge of Bain capital. See:

Obama on the other hand is not much better on the issue of outsourcing despite everything he says. One needs to look no father than GM whom was bailed out by the Obama Administration and does a good job of keeping American jobs in America. Looking at GM's own figures it turns out they outsource almost 2/3 of their jobs overseas and less then 1 in 5 cars are made in the US.

Tricks for vote indeed, on both sides.

Thanks for the resources you showed to me.
Man, it’s so lucky for you to see them playing tricks.
Obama at least did something really awesome like killing Bin Laden.
However, for us Chinese politics are something invisible. You don‘t have any right to vote for your president. He is chosen.

  3. All in all, the ultimate goals of politicians are to get elected, get re-elected, and (in cases other than that of the President) to keep getting re-elected. To do these things, they, to a certain extent, will say anything in order to get more votes. Romney has flip-flopped and changed his proposed economic solutions and policies, along with every other position he's discussed, much more than Obama has, thus he has played more 'tricks for votes' because he's the more volatile candidate. Also, whenever politicians state numbers associated with their suggestions (like Mitt Romney's suggestion that he'll create 12 million jobs), they're lying and incorrect at the same time because there is no way to perfectly predict employment growth numbers for the future, even with well-planned government actions. I agree that trade sanctions against China won't work, and maybe China is manipulating its currency because import taxes are relatively high for Chinese imports in America. Thus, if the U.S. lowers import tariffs on Chinese goods, we might be able to better convince China to not manipulate its currency. Finally, I also agree on Obama's point about the correlation between enhanced education standards and increasing employment. The fact is that the more education you have, the less likely you are to be unemployed, plain and simple. This fact will become even more clear as time goes on because the gap in employment & unemployment rates between college-educated people and people with just a high-school diploma are continually increasing. I don't think, though, that uneducated workers will suffer unemployment forever. They'll suffer from higher unemployment forever, but their employment situation will be more volatile and more paycheck-to-paycheck in nature than people with higher levels of education.

  4. I agree with Sebastian about Obama's view on needing to pump the money into education. Romney continually said that students could go to their parents or loans in order to get their education. I can think of countless students that wouldn't attend college if that was the case because their families can't afford to send them to college. I think the more our younger generations are educated the better it is going to be for the economy. These students that are educated are going to go out into the world a create jobs through there hard work and creativity.
